The Australian Open 08 final

I started watching the Australian Open men's singles final yesterday jetlagged out of my fucking mind. I had been sleeping very little in the week before I left because I was watching cricket being played in Australia while trying to live a working life in Canada. Then I flew out on Friday night and slept little until Sunday morning when I got to Cochin. But the match from the first set was so amazing. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - 'Ali', is a bit like the young Boris Becker of 1985- a young gun who plays with power, audacity, gay abandon, and the innocent invulnerability of a late teen. That's interesting because he has been injured for three years. But he's passionate and yet is willing to smile and congratulate his opponent.

I basically love the guy- he's a fucking star. The way he volleyed sometimes I thought- this guy has the groundstrokes to do well on clay but he could turn the serve and volley on, on grass.

I though he had the match after he got the first set- I think he dropped in intensity in the second set and before he knew it he had lost both the second and third. In the fourth he was dominating and if it had gone to the fifth he would have won simply because the amount of energy Djokovic was expending to keep up with his power. He lost the fourth set tie-break because of inexperience.

But no taking away anything away from Djokovic- he played so so well. Some of the shots he was playing was straight out of the genius playbook. Djokovic deserved to win and deserved to be champion but the way 'Ali' played, he deserved to be champion as well. To think he has never been in the final of ANY ATP tournament before this ...

The quality of tennis in the first and fourth set- just amazing. It was like Federer playing against Federer.
