Lola- A Movie Review

I just saw Lola, a french movie directed in 1961 by Jacques Demy. It is fabulous- a treat to watch. It is endearing, filled with anticipation, minimalist to the point of being threadbare, silent as if someone deleted the music prepared for it- I could go on and on. The movie is at time like a existentialist commentary (bringing to mind Camus). Other times it seems to be ridiculously optimistic as a celebration of life. It is strangely musical and maintains the tension of good comedy. There is a symmetry of people and events in the movie that is perhaps similar to movies years later by Kieslowski (White, Blue, Red). The dialogue packs a lot of punch, like "Ma Nuit Chez Maude" - but the other elements of the movie keep it from spinning into idle intellectual rumination. In a sense the movie's different characteristics are reflections of the various personalities in the story.

This movie is very good.
